In 2015, imports and revenues also dropped, the latter to BRL 84.8 billion (or USD 20.7 billion), down 14.4% from 2014.

Despite the lackluster export results, Abimaq said in a statement that November and December numbers could be an indication of a shift in foreign sales performance. Exports climbed 29.1% in November from October and 14.1% in December from November. Nonetheless, the association warned that the scenario for exporters is one of instability.

“The standstill in export financing, coupled with exchange rate volatility, continues to hamper the exportation process,” Abimaq said in a statement. The only industry to see its exports pick up in 2015 from 2014 was infrastructure and base industries, with an 8.3% increase. Conversely, in the final months of the year, this was the sole industry whose sales went down. All other industries stepped up their exports.

Foreign sales to major buying countries also went down as 2015 progressed. Exports to Latin America fetched USD 3.3 billion, down 12.8% from 2014. Exports to the Mercosur grossed USD 1.5 billion, down 11%. The United States’ imports from Brazil amounted to USD 1.4 billion, down 19.5%, and Europe imported USD 1.5 billion worth of machinery from Brazil, a 27.6% decline over 2014.

Imports also went down, a 23.3% drop to USD 18.818 billion, which Abimaq deems “coherent” with the industry’s recession.

“Unfortunately, this decline was not offset by stronger domestic sales from Brazilian manufacturers, therefore it attests to a sharp reduction in the investment-to-GDP ratio for the third year in a row, reducing the likelihood of economic growth in the wake of the ‘fiscal adjustment’,” the statement reads.

All machinery industry sectors imported less in 2015. The industry saw a USD 10.7 billion trade deficit, down 27.9% from 2014 deficit levels.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

David Alves/Palácio Piratini 19-11-2014

Industry association data show a 16.2% decline in the year.
