The organization sees Brazil’s economy shrinking 4% in 2016, with deep recession underway and recovery set to begin only next year. In 2017, zero growth is expected in Brazil.

It also believes modest recovery will take place in developed countries this year, with emerging economies remaining sluggish. “The world economy is likely to expand no faster in 2016 than in 2015, its slowest pace in five years,” the report reads. “Trade and investment are weak. Sluggish demand is leading to low inflation and inadequate wage and employment growth,” it continues.

The OECD’s previous forecast for the world economy was 0.3 percentage points higher. The Organisation ascribes the forecast revision primarily to the United States, the Eurozone and countries that rely on commodity exports, including Brazil and Canada. “Financial instability risks are substantial” due to “recent falls in equity and bond prices worldwide, and increasing vulnerability of some emerging economies to volatile capital flows and the effects of high domestic debt.”

Next year, the OECD expects the global economy to grow 3.3%, a slightly higher rate than this year’s. The United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to be up 2% in 2016 and 2.2% in 2017. The United Kingdom should see 2.1% and 2% growth, with Canada growing 1.4% and 2.2% and Japan posting 0.8% and 0.6% growth. The Eurozone economy forecasts are 1.4% this year and 1.7% in the next one. Predictions for China are 6.5% in 2016 and 6.2% in 2017, while India is believed to show 7.4% and 7.3% growth.

The OECD calls for strong policy responses from countries to address weak growth, and warns that governments mustn’t rely solely on monetary policies, which have proven insufficient o boost demand and produce growth. The Outlook suggests that fiscal policy must be combined with renewed structural reforms to support growth and provide a more favorable environment for productivity-enhancing innovation and change, particularly in Europe.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Doreen Fiedler/DPA/AFP

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development forecasts modest recovery in developed countries and sluggish economies in emerging ones.
