São Paulo – The challenges facing the Brazilian and global economies will be covered in a lecture by economist José Roberto Mendonça de Barros next Monday (07) at the offices of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce <\/strong>in São Paulo. The event is part of the Chamber’s lecture cycle, with free admission for members. <\/p>\n

Mendonça de Barros served a stint as Economic Policy secretary to the Brazilian Ministry of Finance, from 1995 to 1998, and is currently a managing partner at consulting firm MB Associados. The Monday lecture will cover an array of topics including the consequences of economic change, opportunities and challenges for Brazil, and the shifting market for commodities, of which Brazil is a major exporter and whose prices are hitting multiple-year lows.<\/p>\n

“For this year I envision a scenario of continued economic deterioration and a worsening of finances for most families and businesses. On the foreign front, apprehension regarding China’s economy and the chance of a worldwide recession are the primary concerns,” the economist told ANBA by email. <\/p>\n

Since the year began, Chinese stock exchanges have been oscillating wildly. Indicators tracking performance of the Asian country, which is Brazil’s leading trade partner, are failing to meet expectations. Europe still struggles with deflation and slower-than-expected recovery, as does the United States. Brazil, for its part, wades through a political crisis and economic recession. <\/p>\n

“In our upcoming meeting I will tackle the international and domestic macroeconomic scenario, the political environment and its challenges, its implications to the corporate world, and how to survive through this crisis,” he said. The presentation by Mendonça de Barros is part of the Arab Chamber Lecture Cycle. Past lectures have covered subjects such as the history of Arab peoples, international relations, international law, creative cities and economics. <\/p>\n
