São Paulo – Professors Roberto Khatlab and Hoda Nehme, of Lebanon’s Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (Usek), are slated to speak in lectures and meetings at two Brazilian universities this month. The events will take place on June 9 and 10 at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) in the state of Goiás and on June 14 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).<\/p>\n
The Brazilian-born Khatlab is the director of Usek’s Latin American Studies and Cultures Center (LASCC). Nehme is the dean of Usek’s Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences.<\/p>\n
On the 9th and 10th, the professors will sit at PUC Goiás’ Second International Colloquium of the Center for Brazil-Middle East Studies: Religion, Women and Politics in the Middle East. “Our events are always intended to shorten the academic distance between Lebanon and Latin America,” says Khatlab regarding the participation of Usek in events at Brazilian universities. The professor notes that the Lebanese university sustains 11 academic partnership agreements with institutions in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico.<\/p>\n
“Usek values these agreements in view of the strong human ties that connect Lebanon and Latin America through immigration. By means of academic agreements and contact, Usek aims to transcend said human ties to build even more solid relations that could lead to exchange in all areas of knowledge, as well as carry out projects created by professors and students that are feasible and thorough, so that they be lasting and fruitful for Lebanon and Latin America,” Khatlab points out.<\/p>\n
At the UFRJ, Nehme will deliver the lecture Os diferentes caminhos do pensamento árabe moderno e contemporâneo<\/em> (The different avenues of modern and contemporary Arab thinking). The events are held in partnership by Usek, UFRJ and the Brazil-Lebanon culture institute (Instituto de Cultura Brasil Líbano – ICBL), with support from the Lebanon consulate general in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n On the 13th, the meeting will be intended for students in the Department of Arabic Studies of the UFRJ School of Languages, and thus it will be delivered in Arabic. On the 14th, the presentation will be delivered in French, at the university’s Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences. On both days, there will be a slide presentation in Portuguese and an interpreter will be available to assist with question-asking. <\/p>\n “There are more similitudes than there are differences between the peoples of Latin America and the Middle East. The lectures will set out to clarify Middle East-related issues that are unclear to us Brazilians,” says ICBL vice president Kátia Chalita about the importance of bringing Arab and Latin peoples closer together.
