São Paulo – The Sesc (Social Service of the Commerce) branch of Campo Limpo will hold, next Friday (10), the Sarau dos Refugiados (Refugee Cultural Gathering), with poetry reading and performances by victims of conflicts. This will be the second edition of the event, since another branch, Sesc Pompeia, held the first one back in May. The music and arts gathering will have performers from Congo, Angola, Colombia, Syria and Haiti, among others.<\/p>\n

According to Fabiano Maranhão, sociocultural entertainer at Sesc Campo Limpo, the event is an opportunity for putting refugees and the Brazilian audience in contact with each other. “To raise awareness for their reality is one of the goals. Events like these create room for thought and allow the audience to experience what goes on in the world”, said Maranhão to ANBA this Wednesday (8).<\/p>\n
“Artistically, they share music, poems and chants from their countries with the audience, which is introduced to these people that now live in Brazil”, said Maranhão.<\/p>\n
From Syria, one of the refugees taking part in it is Abdulbaset Jarour. Born in Aleppo, he’s been living in Brazil for a year. He fled the country due to the civil conflicts that’s been going on for five years already. At the Sarau dos Refugiados, Jarour will sing typical songs from the Arab country.<\/p>\n
Marc Pierre, from Haiti, will read poems in Haitian Creole. The group “Os Escolhidos” (The Chosen Ones), formed by Angolans and Congolese, will present rhythms from Congo. Other artists will sing songs and read poems in African dialects. <\/p>\n
