São Paulo – The Syrian refugee Muna Darweesh is delivering a cooking workshop on July 31 in São Paulo, Brazil. She will show how to make two typical Syrian delicacies: warak enab – grape leaf roll – and mahshi malfouf – cabbage rolls.<\/p>\n

Both dishes are made with ground beef, rice, lemon and Syrian spices. Participants will also be able to sample the dishes and try the othmaliyeh, an easy-to-make dessert made with angel hair pasta. She will speak in Portuguese and in English, and translation will be available. <\/p>\n

The workshop is offered by Migraflix, a social platform that organizes cultural workshops administered by immigrants and refugees in Brazil. The price is BRL 90 and the speaker gets to keep 80% of proceeds. <\/p>\n

A native of Latakia, on the Syrian coast, Darweesh holds a degree in English literature and moved to Brazil in 2013 fleeing the conflicts in her country. Presently, she has a Syrian restaurant delivery in downtown São Paulo and sells typical sweets to the Muslim community that frequents the nearby Mesquita Brasil mosque. <\/p>\n
