São Paulo – This next Monday (19), the United Nations General Assembly will hold the Summit for Refugees and Migrants in its headquarters in New York. Heads of state and governments will attend the event, marking the first time the UN organizes an event with the presence of the world’s main leaders to discuss this specific topic.<\/p>\n
The summit aims to develop a model so that the international community can offer a more effective answer to the refuge and mass migration issues. Ministers, UN leaders, and representatives of the civil society, the private sector, international organizations and universities will attend.<\/p>\n
UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, and World Bank president Jim Yong Kim will be at the summit’s opening ceremony.<\/p>\n
The meeting will cover issues such as the ways of dealing with the causes of large refugee movements; international action and cooperation for refugees and migrants and the issues linked to their displacement; and how to deal with the vulnerabilities of refugees and migrants during their journey from their home countries to their destinations.<\/p>\n
The day after the summit, September 20, the president of the United States, Barack Obama, will host the Leaders’ Summit on Refugees, alongside co-hosts Canada, Ethiopia, Germany, Jordan, Mexico and Sweden. Together, they will pledge to governments significant new commitments on refugees. The Leaders’ meeting, also in the United States, will complement the UN’s summit.<\/p>\n
