São Paulo – A conference and a seminar will debate on the integration of refugees in their new areas of residence between this Wednesday (23) and Friday (25) in São Bernardo do Campo, in the São Paulo metro area known as ABC Paulista. The events are organized by ABC Federal University in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).<\/p>\n
The debates in the 1st Latin American Conference and 7th National Seminar of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair will share the central theme “Refugees Local Integration: experiences and challenges.” The chair was named after the Brazilian diplomat who got killed during an attack in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2003, while working for the United Nations. <\/p>\n
Foreign and Brazilian experts have been invited to speak. The event will be open to the academic community and the general public, according to the UN. Some activities, however, are restricted only to universities associated with the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair. <\/p>\n
The events will also include awards for the master’s and doctor’s projects of the Chair and a photo exhibition portraying the participation of refugee athletes in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics Games. The keynote speaker will be the political scientist and professor of the Buenos Aires University and Lanús National University, Ana Paula Penchaszadeh.<\/p>\n
Representatives of UNHCR partner refugee aid organizations, such as São Paulo Caritas Archdiocesan, and NGOs such as Adus and Compassiva will take part in the debates on refugee integration and the participation of civil society in the cause. There will be a musical presentation by a choir of refugee children. <\/p>\n
