It is now very close to matching the world record set in 2014 by Three Gorges Dam in China, at 98.8 million MWh.

Itaipu technicians expect the plant to go past 98.8 million MWh next Saturday (17). By Wednesday (21), the dam is seen achieving an unprecedented 100 million MWh in a year. According to Itaipu, this will be the first time in history that a dam reaches such an output in one year – the amount is enough to supply the entire world for almost two days. Itaipu forecasts an output higher than 102 million MWh by the end of this year.

Friday’s milestone was hailed in a ceremony at Itaipu, with two big screens displaying a countdown. A combination of factors drove the performance: regular inflows from the Paraná River, strong demand for power from Brazil and Uruguay, optimal usage of natural resources and high-performance equipment.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

This Friday (16) saw the hydroelectric plant reach 98.63 million MWh.
