São Paulo – Air transport demand was up 6.3% in 2016 from 2015, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported this Thursday (2). The rate is higher than the average from the past ten years, which is 5.5%. Capacity grew by 6.2%, with the load factor going up 0.1 percentage point to 80.5%.<\/p>\n

IATA said 2016 was a great year for the industry. “Air travel was a good news story in 2016. Connectivity increased with the establishment of more than 700 new routes. And a $44 fall in average return fares helped to make air travel even more accessible,” said IATA director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac. He said demand continues to grow. <\/p>\n

In December, North America had the highest passenger load factor at 83%, followed by Latin America at 81.2% and Asia\/Pacific at 80.8%. Fourth in the ranking was Europe at 80.6%, trailed by the Middle East at 77.4% and Africa at 71.6%. <\/p>\n

The Asia\/Pacific region was the biggest market for air travel in December 2016, followed by Europe, North America, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa, in that order. Juniac called upon governments to work on the necessary infrastructure to keep pace with the industry, as well as growth-friendly regulation and taxes. <\/p>\n

Considering international flights only, demand and capacity were up 6.7% and 6.9%, while load factor dropped by 0.2 percentage point to 79.6%. Demand increased in all regions of the world. Domestic travel growth reached 5.7% in 2016.<\/p>\n
