The Brazilian mining company issued its results this Thursday (23), including a 14.7% increase in net operating income, to USD 29.36 billion – which it imputed to higher sale prices as well as increased output for iron ore and pellets.

According to the report released by Vale, sales to the Middle East reached USD 967 million last year, which is close to the 2015 result of USD 969 million. Countries in the region purchased 9 million tons of ore and pellets from Vale, down 7.6% from 9.8 million tons in 2015.

The Middle East accounted for 2.6% of total ore sales by Vale, down 0.3 percentage point from 2015.

Vale owns an iron ore pelletizing plant and a distribution center in Sohar, Oman. The plant produced 2.5 million tons in quarter four 2016, an all-time high for the period and up 63.3%from Q4 2015, a period which included a maintenance shutdown at the plant.

Vale’s report says its economic-financial results were strong last year, with a solid operational performance and some yearly production records, including iron ore (348.8 million tons), nickel (311,000 tons), copper (453,100 tons), cobalt (5,800 tons) and gold as a byproduct of copper and nickel concentrate (438,000 ounces).

Net profit reached USD 3.982 million for Vale, which had seen USD 12.129 billion in losses in 2015. The USD 16.111 billion difference from year to year was mostly the result of a wider EBITDA margin (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization), at USD 5.1 billion; higher gains from exchange rate fluctuations (USD 10.629 billion) and reduced impairment of non-circulating assets and onerous contracts (USD 6.014 billion).

On the other hand, Vale paid more in taxes (USD 7.251 billion) due to the net profit it registered.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Press Release

Exports to the region reached USD 967 million last year, the Brazilian mining company reported.
