São Paulo – The Federal University of São Carlos (UFScar) is accepting enrolments from refugees for its 65 graduate courses, spanning its campuses in São Carlos, Araras, Sorocaba, and Lagoa dos Sinos, all of them in the state of São Paulo. The call for entries was issued this week, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).<\/p>\n

The university is selecting would-be refugee students for the tenth time, as a member of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair (CSVM, in the Portuguese acronym), an initiative from the UNHCR in Brazil. There is one opening for a refugee in each of the courses in areas such as natural sciences, human sciences, and biological sciences. <\/p>\n

“Initiatives like UFScar’s enable refugees to fully exert their capabilities and to contribute to the country that welcomed them,” a press release quoted UNHCR representative in Brazil Isabel Marquez as saying. <\/p>\n

To apply, candidates must provide proof of refugee status from the National Committee on Refugees (Conare) and to have taken the National High School Exam (Enem) in 2013 or later. Those who haven’t can take the test this year, on May 8 and 19. <\/p>\n

Although roughly 9,000 people officially recognized as refugees are currently living in Brazil, according to data from Conare, not many seats offered by UFScar are usually filled, according to Thaís Juliana Palomino, the coordinator of the Department for Academic and Pedagogical Student Follow-Up (Acompanhamento Acadêmico e Pedagógico para Estudantes – Caape), an arm of the university’s Office of the Provost for Graduate Courses.<\/p>\n

“This is why this initiative must publicized widely, so that people can apply for the Enem and then for this selection process,” said Palomino.<\/p>\n
