The solar power-oriented initiative is intended to reduce dependency on polluting energy sources, and to allow its population to generate power independently, the Oman News Agency reported.

The Trade and Industry minister Ali al-Sunaidy, who attended the program’s launch, said that Sahim enables citizens and organizations to produce electricity for personal use, and to sell any surplus to power utilities at cost prices.

Currently, all of Oman’s electricity derives from non-renewable sources, and 96% of it is gas-based.

According to al-Sunaidy, the Sahim project will also enable commercial facilities, schools and other institutions to produce energy in unorthodox locations such as parking lots.

The program also involves small and medium businesses that have been trained to provide power generation-related services. The minister encouraged the owners of businesses, farms and households to have their own solar panels.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Mohammed Mahjoub/AFP

The Gulf country kicked off its Sahim project this Wednesday.
