São Paulo – A group of 50 Brazilian students will compete in the WorldSkills Competition, a technical and services skills event that will take place from October 14 to 16 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The competition is held every two years by the global organization WorldSkills, which gathers institutions and organizations from 76 countries.<\/p>\n

In the last edition, held in the city of São Paulo, Brazilians earned the most medals and won the WorldSkills Competition. The event includes 50 types of technical skills professions and Brazil will compete in every category this year, according to information from the manager of Olympics and Exams of Senai (National Service of Industrial Training), José Luis Gonçalves Leitão.<\/p>\n
Among the students taking part in the competition in Abu Dhabi, 44 come from Senai courses and six from Senac (National Service for Commercial Education) courses. Senai held a selection to choose the competitors for technical professions, while Senac held for services professions. <\/p>\n
WorldSkills categories include aircraft maintenance, automobile technology, bakery, car painting, carpentry, cooking, electrical installations, electronics, hairdressing, landscape gardening, plastic die engineering, polymechanics and automation, welding, wall and floor tiling, stonemasonry and 3D Digital Game Art. <\/p>\n
The list of competitors from Brazil was announced last year and in January of this year they started training for the competition. Training will continue until October, according to Leitão. Within Senai, training is taking place in five units: three in Brasília, one in Joinville, Santa Catarina state, and one in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre. <\/p>\n
According to Leitão, the WorldSkills Competition aims to show the importance of skills technical and services professions and value these activities. He says that they are important to the economic development of all countries. “I don’t know one student that took part that didn’t have a job secured,” says the manager, on the competition importante to open professional doors to these talents.<\/p>\n
To travel abroad and to the UAE will also be something completely new in the lives of these young Brazilians. Leitão says that in Brazil the technological activity is related to the poor, but that this is not the reality seen in other countries.<\/p>\n
Senai’s manager of Olympics and Exams points out the high level of the Brazilian competitors. The championship won by Brazil in 2015 was the result of a long term work, of six to seven years, according to Leitão. It took some second and third places to reach first for the first time. The manager underscores also the 10 months of training for the competition and the importance of the trainers for the students to reach world levels.<\/p>\n
The competition has a test in each area, which is kept secret. The students only get to see the challenge at the time of the exam. Leitão says that it’s a practical test, but that it requires theory knowledge such as reading, mathematics, among others, to solve the challenges proposed. Machinery and inputs used in the exams come from global sponsoring brands. Not all of them operate in Brazil. <\/p>\n
