Check also the interviews with the Union of Arab Chambers secretary general Khaled Hanafy and Palestinian ambassador in Brasília, Ibrahim Alzeben, about president Jair Bolsonaro government’s nods to Israel and the eventual impacts this policies may have on Brazil’s trade with the Arab world. Bolsonaro had a dinner with Arab and Muslim diplomats last week after having announced the opening of an office in Jerusalem to foster businesses with Israel.
“We don’t want to interfere in Brazilian foreign policy, but we can advise Brazilians because we know the Arab market, we know that consumers and entrepreneurs are very sensitive to this kind of announcement,” said Hanafy. The Union of Chambers is the leading business organization in the Arab world.
“I spoke over dinner that Brazil should stay away from this conflict, because it is a matter that doesn’t concern Brazil. It is an international topic, of International Law. It is a long a historical process, not a topic for one government or another,” added Alzeben, who is also the Council of Arab Ambassadors dean in Brazil.
Both Israelis and Palestinians claim sovereignty over Jerusalem and the announcement of the business office was poorly received by the Arab side.
