This Monday (17) in your ANBA Bulletin: Sharjah Book Authority is receiving applications for the Sharjah Translation Award Turjuman. The award highlights books by Arab authors translated into other languages. Applications are accepted until September 1st. Supplies from Brazil reached Lebanon following the port explosion. A Brazilian delegation led by former president Michel Temer was welcomed by Lebanon’s president Michel Aoun last week in Beirut. Brazilian maestro João Carlos Martins launched a campaign to help Lebanese artists through the difficult times in the country, which have been aggravated by the port blasts. And an Arab News report details a new fashion wave among Arab women who are now into modest fashion and sneaker culture.

Supplies from Brazil reach Lebanon, Aoun welcomes Temer

 | Lebanon’s president Michel Aoun welcomed this Thursday (13) a Brazilian delegation led by former president Michel Temer that flew to Lebanon to deliver donated supplies. Temer was chosen by Brazil’s federal government to helm the mission. He and his entourage boarded a Beirut-bound Embraer 190 (VC-2) aircraft from São Paulo on Wednesday (12). Another plane – a KC-390 Millenium – took off carrying donations from Brazil’s Ministry of Health and organizations including the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC).

Brazilian conductor launching campaign for Lebanese artists

In a bid to help young Lebanese artists through the difficult times in the country, with the Port of Beirut blast on August 4, the coronavirus pandemic, and a political and economic crisis, conductor João Carlos Martins (pictured above) announced that he will play a concert with the SESI-SP Bachiana Philharmonic Orchestra to raise funds once the pandemic is over and concert halls and auditoriums have reopened.

Sharjah accepting applications for translation award

The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) is receiving applications for the fourth edition of the Sharjah Translation Award ‘Turjuman’. The award highlights books by Arab authors translated into other languages across the world. It aims at encouraging international translators and publishers to pick up titles written by renowned Arab authors, thereby contributing to global appreciation of Arabic literature and enhancing cross-cultural communication.

Sneakers gain footing with women in the Middle East

Sneakers are becoming increasingly popular among women in the Middle East – a demographic that stereotypically splurges on fancy clothing with ornate embellishments, paired with more “ladylike” shoes. While glamour has traditionally been the driving force behind fashion in the region, comfort is now heavily influencing style movements, particularly modest fashion and sneaker culture, Arab News reported.

July coffee export volume the 2nd highest on record

July in Brazil saw the second-highest coffee export volume on record, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, at 3 million bags of green, instant, and roast-and-ground coffee shipped abroad. Export revenues came out to USD 356.8 million, or BRL 1.9 billion at current exchange rates, up 22.3% in reais from July 2019. Prices averaged USD 117.4 per bag shipped. The numbers are from the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).
