This Monday (21) in your ANBA Bulletin: Brazilians have worked for imparting an ever-increasing quality to the beef produced and exported in the country. The selection of bulls to generate the best calf is the focus, but the industry is already looking at genetic improvement. Beef exports from Brazil are set to end the year at a record high. The Chinese demand is the one that grows the most. Arab countries are still some of the top buyers, but their purchases declined in 2020. A biodegradable packaging was developed by Brazilian researchers to export mango. And couscous has joined the UNESCO list of Intangible Culture Heritage as a result of a joint application by four Arab countries – Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.

 | Brazilian researchers developed a biodegradable packaging for exporting mango. The package is made of coconut fiber and was designed to ship the processed fruit. The research was developed as part of the Gesfrut project by Bruna Machado from Bahia’s National Service of Industrial Training (SENAI) in partnership with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) at the Cassava & Tropical Fruits unit.

 | Each calf that is born in Brazil today tends to be “better” than the previous generation. As a result of years of research in farms, universities and industries, Brazil now produces a cattle of high productivity, smaller time for slaughter, and an increasingly softer meat. But there’s still a long way to go in the pursuit of perfection – after all, the genetic improvement of animals is still taking its first steps.

 | Footwear exports from Brazil are expected to climb 21.2% next year, while production should grow by 19% year on year, the Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados) forecasts. This won’t be a growth, actually, but a resumption in the industry, which has been strongly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Year to date through November, exports were down by 19.4%.
