On mission, Arabs learn more about Brazil
This Thursday (14) in your ANBA Bulletin: Mission brought Arab companies to Brazil this month. The initiative occurred in parallel with the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries and included eight companies from different sectors. They participated in a schedule focused on understanding the market, investment possibilities, and business contacts.
Núbio Brito exhibited and was awarded for his canvas at an event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The artist from the Brazilian state of Tocantins returned to painting at 40 and has also exhibited in Paris and London.
The Emirate of Sharjah is looking for startups linked to sectors such as water technologies, energy, design, architecture, transport, and logistics to accelerate. There initiative seeks Brazilian companies. Applications are open until the August 16.

This Friday (15) in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, the Fencing World Championship will begin, featuring 20 Brazilians among the competitors. According to information released by the Brazilian Fencing Confederation (CBE), Brazil will participate in men’s and women’s singles and teams contests with the three weapons: foil, épée, and sabre.

The Emirate of Sharjah’s Research, Technology, and Innovation Park free zone (SRTIP) has registration open for startups to participate in the third edition of its acceleration program. The program informed it is seeking Brazilian companies and is open for applications until August 16. To apply, companies must access the Sharjah Advanced Industry Accelerator (SAIA) website.

Arab companies undertook last week a mission to Brazil that provided them a better understanding of the Brazilian market, information on how to invest in the country, and a network of contacts. The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), which held and organized the initiative, prepared a schedule of appointments as well as one-on-one B2B meetings according to the interests of each company. Eight companies from Arab countries joined.

From the Brazilian state of Tocantins, plastic artist Núbio Cunha Brito had a work exhibited in May this year in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The ‘Ciganos’ [‘Gypsies’] canvas was awarded during its exhibition. Index Dubai 2022 International Fair of Furniture & Interior Design featured works by artists from 14 different countries and was hosted by the International Association of Artists and Partners – AIA ArtCom Expo.

Brazilian footwear exports rose 67.5% in revenue and 31.3% in volume in the first half of 2022 compared to the first six months of last year, according to data released by the Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados) this Monday (11). The volume reached 7.5 million pairs shipped, generating a USD 651.6 million revenue.

Brazil’s national oil company Petrobras on Monday (11) finalized the sale of 51% of Petrobras Gás SA (Gaspetro) to Compass Gás e Energia SA. The transaction was concluded for BRL 2.097 billion (USD 394), fully paid on the date. Gaspetro is a holding firm with equity interests in 18 natural gas distribution companies, located in all regions of Brazil.

Last week, the Brazilian Parliament Congress held a special session to mark the 74th anniversary of the Nakba in Palestine. The session came following an invitation by a number of deputies who support the Palestinian cause, such as Camilo Capiberibe, Alexandre Padilha and Márcio Jerry, in partnership with the Brazil-Palestine Institution (IBRASPAL).

Home to the most significant Arab community outside the Middle East, Brazil maintains in its culture strong attributes common to that region, such as resilience, tolerance, and progress through work. More than in the cultural and human spheres, the 22 Arab League countries have strong commercial ties with the Brazilian market, strengthened after agreements with different nations. However, there is still space and environment to make the relationship even more robust, modern, and dynamic to build new bridges and continue converting the existing bond into prosperity.

When I first visited Abu Dhabi, one thing I found incredibly fascinating was how the Brazilian combat sport of jiu-jitsu had become so fondly adopted by Emiratis. In the UAE, the martial art is practiced across 15 centers and taught in over 100 schools – while Abu Dhabi is now considered a world jiu-jitsu capital. A big part of the national obsession with ju-jitsu is down to the efforts to promote the sport by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan who is himself an avid practitioner.
