Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries special
This special edition of the ANBA Bulletin: Full coverage of the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries, which took place on Monday (4) in a hybrid format, with in-person activities in São Paulo.
The fourth edition of the biennial event brought together over 600 people at the Renaissance hotel, including Brazilian and Arab authorities, diplomats, and businesspeople. Topics such as expanding the trade basket, production and export of Arab fertilizers to Brazil, investment opportunities, corporate governance (ESG), halal market, and innovation, among others, were discussed.
“The Forum highlights the legacy built up over seven decades by the Arab Brazilian Chamber and renews the commitment of our countries to building a future of dialogue, cooperation, and prosperity,” said Brazilian vice president of the republic Hamilton Mourão at the event.
Agreements were signed between the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) and other entities, such as ApexBrasil. An Arab artist performed a sand art show about the history of Arab immigration and the ABCC. A dinner marked the celebration of the entity's 70th anniversary.

Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro expects to welcome four leaders from Arab countries in Brasília later this year. So said Bolsonaro in a video-recorded participation in the opening ceremony of the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries on Monday (4), when he added that Brazil-Arab relations have strengthened in the current landscape of seeking out solutions for food security and fertilizer supply.

In a recorded speech, the Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, Marcos Montes, defended partnerships between Arab and Brazilian companies to produce fertilizers in the South American country.

Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur) president Silvio Nascimento pointed out the diversity of the country as one of its strengths to attract tourists, particularly Arabs. Under the theme “A Land Blessed with a Unique Nature: Brazil Welcomes the Arab Countries,” the executive spoke during the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries.

After the authorities’ presentations at the 4th Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries, the first panel was an invitation to think differently about Business and Innovation, the event’s theme. “Data is not real; facts are!” With this provocation, philosopher and contemporary researcher Anna Flavia Ribeiro began her presentation. She proposed a new standpoint to think about the future and guaranteed: In order to change, it is necessary to strip off beliefs, convictions, and concepts.

Egypt-based firms Egyptian Financial & Industrial Co. (EFIC) and Suez Company for Fertilizer Production (SCFP) signed a contract for selling their fertilizer products in Brazil via Brazil’s Prime for Import & Export. The signing took place during the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries on Monday (4).

The ministers of Commerce and Industry of Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan participated in the opening of the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries over the internet and presented opportunities for Brazilians. The Minister of Trade and Industry of Egypt, Nevine Gamea said there are possibilities for investment in the Egyptian market in transportation, spare parts, medicines, engineering and textile industries, and new and renewable energies.

The League of Arab States plan on launching a new agreement between Arab countries to improve the investment climate, facilitate capital and businesspeople movements across the region, create more job opportunities, and decrease unemployment rates.

“We must remember that the Arab world goes beyond its borders,” said the secretary-general of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers and moderator of the panel “Economic Integration for Competitiveness and Investment” of the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries.

The “Connections that change the world” panel in the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries was moderated by Rafael José Deitos, technical director of the Itaipu Technological Park, who defined the theme as a “key point for innovation.” He opened the panel by giving the floor to Sudanese Ahmed Elmurtada from @249Startups to talk about his experience and opportunities for Brazil and Sudan. Ahmed gave an overview of where he lives, the third-largest country in Africa: “We have a lot of mineral resources, livestock, and technology. About 65% of Sudan’s population is under 35, and 6% has bank accounts, meaning there is much room for innovation.”

“Halal was born ESG; it is only halal if you preserve the environment to produce. It is only halal if effectively [the company] does not have enslaved or child labor. It is only halal if production favors human health; preserving life within the Islamic tradition is imperative. This is our commitment within ESG,” said Ali Hussein El Zoghbi, vice president of the Federation of Muslim Associations of Brazil (Fambras), at the Corporate Governance in International Operations panel.

The volume of trade between Brazil and Algeria was USD 3 billion in 2021, according to Algeria’s Industry Ministry secretary-general Belabrik Salah Eddine. Besides highlighting the figure, Eddine commented that this is the first time that the Algerian state participates in an economic forum in Brazil. “This is testament to the importance we attach to this type of events, the economy, investments, and bilateral cooperation, particularly because we are the top destination for exports from Brazil in Africa and the third in the Arab world,” he said.
