Yesterday (25) was the Arab Community Day in Brazil. As part of the celebrations, the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and the Arab World Institute (AWI) in Paris promote the exhibition “Taswir, a fotografia árabe contemporânea” (Taswir, Contemporary Arab Photography) at Instituto Tomie Ohtake in São Paulo starting on Thursday (28). The show also celebrates 74 years of the League of Arab States. This is the first event organized by the Arab Brazilian Chamber in partnership with AWI, and the first one held by the French institute in Latin America. “This show kicks off our partnership with AWI and signifies that we now play a major role when it comes to spreading Arab culture in Brazil and showing the growing contribution of Arabs to the world through culture,” said the Arab Brazilian Chamber president Rubens Hannun, adding that the exhibition will be taken later to Brasília and Porto Alegre.
The exhibition features 78 photographs taken by 14 photographers from 12 countries. It brings together material previously exhibited on two shows held by AWI in France. “There are many photos of everyday life, so the exhibit provides a different take on the Arab world by focusing on day-to-day living,” commented the Arab Brazilian Chamber Cultural director and the event’s curator Silvia Antibas.
Other highlights from this ANBA Bulletin edition include two news on education: a team of students from Escola SESI Reitor Miguel Calmon in Salvador, Brazil, will represent the country at the international phase of the challenge Formula 1 in Schools later this year in Abu Dhabi; and the university center Unicesumar, also in Brazil, opened last week a distance learning unit in Dubai, aiming to attract Brazilians living in the UAE.
