Events on Egypt and Palestine are the highlight of the ANBA Bulletin of this Wednesday (17). From October 22 to 26, in Rio de Janeiro, there will be a full week of activities under the theme “Nefer, Beauty in Ancient Egypt.” Organized by the Human and Social Sciences Center of the Federal University of the state of Rio de Janeiro (Unirio), the event will include art exhibition, lectures, fashion shows, storytelling and Egyptian make-up sessions. The activities will focus on four queens of ancient times - Nefertiti, Nefertari, Hatshepsut and Cleopatra –, plus the goddess Isis. “The idea is to seduce using aesthetics, but also relay a message, work people’s sensitivity for what really matters, which is the respect for the other, even if the other is completely different from us, and women’s empowerment,” said Márcia Machado (picture above), one of the event’s organizers, to journalist Isaura Daniel.
Also next week, in São Paulo, the University of São Paulo (USP)’s Center for Arab Studies and Institute for International Relations will host the 2nd International Conference on the Palestinian Issue – Oslo at 25: The Elusive Peace, to discuss the peace agreements reached in Norway’s capital 25 years ago by then-Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) president Yasser Arafat and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, brokered by United States president Bill Clinton. “We want to go over the problems and the shortcomings that have caused this agreement to fail,” said USP Arab History professor and one of the event’s organizers, Arlene Clemesha, to reporter Bruna Garcia. The forum takes place on October 22 and 23.
The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce paid tribute to former president Marcelo Sallum with the unveiling of his portrait in the former presidents’ gallery, at the organization’s headquarters, in São Paulo. “We’re benefiting from many of the things that Marcelo left us,” said the Arab Chamber’s current president, Rubens Hannun. “I’m very happy to see my portrait hanging alongside other former presidents, people that I have a lot of respect for, friends,“ said Sallum.
