Startups find incentives in the Gulf

This Friday (9) in your ANBA Bulletin: The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) organized a Brazilian startup mission to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The entrepreneurs participating found an innovative business-friendly reality. Solutions pitched by them also captured the attention of Arab investors and potential partners.

ABCC president Osmar Chohfi has begun a new term. In an interview with ANBA, the diplomat talked about the institution’s priorities for the 2023-2024 biennium. Find out who are the vice presidents that accompany Chohfi in this mission.

The fusion between Arab and Northeastern Brazilian cultures will be the theme of a Rio de Janeiro-based June festival [festa junina] square dance group this year. The Cultural Association Quadrilha Junina Geração Realce announced the theme ‘Sertão das Arábias’ [‘Arabian Sertão’] for 2023, authored by cultural producers Ricardo Lizio and Wilson Mendes.

Osmar Chohfi began new term at Arab Brazilian Chamber

Diplomat Osmar Chohfi began earlier this year a new tenure as president of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), after leading the entity in 2021 and 2022. Reelected in January by the ABCC Board of Directors for another two years, Chohfi started the new phase bent on taking the institution to even greater heights of excellence, particularly in digitization and the halal market, what he plans on doing alongside the directors he chose to accompany him.

Sharjah Biennial 2023 focuses on Global South

My best friend growing up was white. One day she asked her mother when I was going to get better,” narrated Brazilian visual artist Aline Motta in the work ‘A Água é uma máquina do tempo’ [‘Water is a time machine,’ in free translation], on display at the 15th Sharjah Biennial, in the United Arab Emirates. According to her, the work focuses mainly on the story of her great-great-grandmother Ambrosina, who lived in downtown Rio de Janeiro at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. “Contrasting with the present, I also report on the death of my mother, who passed away in 2011, and how the life stories of these women are shuffled and intertwined over time,” said Aline.

Tunisia’s Olyfo launches products on Amazon

Tunisian olive and olive oil producer Olyfo Olive Oil Company is rapidly expanding in the global market and plans on breaking into Brazil. Olyfo is the brainchild of childhood friends Ahmed Hamza and Yahya Chemli and was created in 2020. Three years were enough for the company to reach several foreign markets.

Saudi consumers want to use augmented reality for shopping

UAE one of target markets of footwear from Brazil

Brazilian footwear exporters chose target markets to promote their products over the next biennium and included two Arab countries among them. Brazil’s Petrobras studies new wind energy projects

Brazilian oil company Petrobras will study the feasibility of seven offshore wind power generation projects off the Brazilian coast. Potential wind farms could cover the states of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, and Rio Grande do Sul. They are expected to generate up to 14.5 gigawatts of power. The analysis will be carried out in cooperation with private company Equinor, which has been operating in the country since 2001 and will evaluate technical, economic, and environmental possibilities.

Record number of foreign tourists visited Brazil in January

Brazil reported an important milestone of 868,587 foreign tourists in the first month of 2023. The result is a historical record in the four-year series. The numbers exceeded by over 100,000 people the figure from the last two years before the COVID-19 pandemic when 756,883 (2019) and 750,457 (2020) international visitors entered the country. Compared to January 2022, which had 275,942 tourists, the number almost tripled.
