51st Algiers International International Fair

This Wednesday (15) in your ANBA Bulletin: after a seven-year hiatus, the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce will be back this year at the Algiers International Fair, a multi-industry show taking place in the Algerian capital from June 18 to 23. Companies interested in being exhibitors at the stand organized by the Chamber and the Embassy of Brazil in Algiers can register up until June 5. The most promising industries in Algeria are machinery and equipment, cosmetics, and agribusiness. “Algeria is a very important country to us, our fourth trade partner. We need to develop a much closer relation to Algeria than in the last few years,” Arab Chamber CEO Tamer Mansour told ANBA's Isaura Daniel. There are slots available for six exhibitors.

And Brazil's beachwear brand Shorts Co., whose flagship product is men's shorts, is opening a store in Saudi Arabia. It has partnered up with a Saudi distributor that will manage the point of sale under a franchise arrangement. The store is slated to open in the second half of the year. The distributor will also forward the clothing items to multibrand stores in Arab countries.

And Thais Sousa has a special report out on Ramadan, the current month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims will fast from sunup to sundown this time of year and then join family and friends for evening feasts, as well as donate food to the poor. This buoys demand, which can be ascertained by looking at Brazilian-Arab trade figures. According to Arab food industry players, demand soars in the months leading up to Ramadan, since stockpiling is needed. Food sales from Brazil to the region, for instance, were up 46% in April.

And May 21 to 24 will see the Embassy of Brazil in Beirut and the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center host the art show Colors of Bahia, a tribute to Paulo & Vera, featuring work by the Bahia-born fine artist Ana Cacau in the capital of Lebanon, Bruna Garcia reports. The show is a tribute to the ambassador of Brazil to Lebanon, Paulo Cordeiro, and his wife Vera Estrela, who passed away last week in a car accident while vacationing in Italy.
