New York – Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, speaking to the press at the UN General Assembly yesterday, declared that he considers African support key to getting Security Council reform approval, which would put six more permanent members on the council: one from the Americas, two from Africa, two from Asia and one from Europe.
Amorim pointed out that African countries support a reform proposal that is similar to the one Brazil is in favour of. However, whereas Brazil (and its G-4 partners, Germany, India and Japan) have expressed a willingness to accept seats on the Security Council without veto powers, the Africans want all council members to have a veto. Amorim says that in spite of the difference of opinion the Africans are now aware of the importance of achieving council reform.
