São Paulo – Brazilian agribusiness exports generated US$ 7.2 billion in May, expansion of 19.7% over the same month in 2009, according to figures disclosed today (10) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. The growth was boosted by shipments of sugar, soy, beef, live animals and forestry products.
Foreign sales in the sugar and alcohol sector totalled US$ 1 billion, growth of 34.3% over May last year, those of the soy complex (grain, chaff and oil), US$ 2.65 billion, expansion of 14.6%, and those of meats, US$ 1.2 billion, 24.5% more.
Brazilian imports of agricultural products, according to the Ministry, totalled US$ 1 billion in May, growth of 55.3% over the same month in 2009.
In the accumulated result for 2010, sector exports generated US$ 28 billion, growth of 16.5% over the first five months of last year. According to the Ministry, the main cause for this expansion was the rise in prices.
