Brasília – The Gross Agricultural Production Value (VBP) ended 2019 at BRL 630.9 billion (USD 152.2 billion), up 2.6% from the previous year. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) reported that the value is a record high for the historical series started in 1989, surpassing 2017 VBP at BRL 627.1 billion (USD 151.3 billion). Last year, crops grossed BRL 441.1 billion (USD 106.4 billion), and livestock BRL 219.8 billion (USD 53 billion).
In a press release, the Department of Finance and Information of the Secretariat of Agricultural Policy of MAPA stressed that last year saw an outstanding growth of the maize revenue and the performance was also impressive in livestock, which saw a real growth at 9%. Crops in general were down 0.5%.
For the ministry, the main growth drivers include the increase in foreign sales, which was heavily impacted in late 2019 by the livestock hike – highlights are beef, pork and poultry exports growth as well as the increase in domestic egg consumption
The indicators of crop and agricultural prices show preliminary estimates of 2020 gross agricultural production value at BRL 674.8 billion (USD 162.8 billion), up 7% from 2019. Crops are predicted to grow by 4.6% and livestock by 11.3%
