São Paulo – Agroindustry Koelhos, in the northeastern Brazilian state of Alagoas, is going to invest R$ 164 million (US$ 72 million at current exchange rates) to build a sugar mill in Minas Gerais. The company started building the Santa Juliana Mill in the city of Santa Juliana in December.
When ready, the mill should generate 370 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs. Agroindustry Koelhos was established in 1958 and produces 125,000 tonnes of sugar and 45 million litres of alcohol per crop. The company also has around 700,000 coconut palms in an area of 4,500 hectares.
At Santa Juliana Mill, the group forecasts production of 29 million litres of hydrated alcohol, 65 million litres of anhydrous alcohol and 162,000 tonnes of sugar, from a plantation of 26,000 hectares of sugarcane. This information was supplied by the government of the state of Minas Gerais.
