São Paulo – Brazilian airports saw record-high passenger throughput in 2013, at 89 million domestic arrivals and 9.4 international ones. The figures were culled from a survey conducted by the Ministry of Tourism.
“The target is to have an even greater increase this year, since the World Cup and the Olympics are up and coming, and airports are coming, and the airports are getting ready for the higher demand,” said Tourism minister Vinicius Lages according to a press release.
According to the ministry, the 2013-2016 National Tourism Plan is designed to make Brazil into the world’s third leading tourism economy by 2022. At this time, the country boasts the sixth largest tourism industry in the world. The industry posted roughly R$ 250 billion (US$ 108 billion) in revenues in 2012.
