São Paulo – The third edition of Ocupar é Resistir (Occupy and Resist), a lunch event at the Al Janiah restaurant in downtown São Paulo. The event is organized by Syrian, Palestinian and Brazilian residents of Leila Khaled Occupation to raise funds for structural renovations. The event had its first edition in May.
Next Sunday, chef Salam, assisted by the residents, will offer two typical Arab dishes: beef uzzy (pictured above) – puff pastry stuffed with rice, carrots, green bell peppers and beef, plus a raw beef kibbeh entrée; and vegetarian uzzy, with all of the former’s ingredients except beef, com and raw vegetarian kibbeh made from nuts. Each dish goes for BRL 35, and both are accompanied by a fresh curd and cucumber salad.
In addition to the food, hairdresser services will be available from Salão da Ocupa, the occupation’s salon, with Hassan Issa, who lives there and specializes in female haircuts.
Musician Danilo Gomes will play Brazilian popular music and R&B, and Sarau Faixa de Gaza – the Gaza Strip Recital – will feature an open mic for anyone to recite their or someone else’s poetry. Cine Clube Invenção – the Invention Film Club – will feature a special selection of short films for children.
Starting 6pm, Baile do Di Função will feature musical performances and DJ sets, with tickets selling for BRL 10.
