Algiers – Algeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) climbed 1.5% year-on-year in Q1, local news outlet APS quoted the National Office of Statistics (ONS, acronym in French) as reporting this Monday (29).
Growth was driven by a 3.9% hike in non-oil sectors, with oil and gas GDP shrinking by 7.7%. Q1 2018 had seen a 2.4% drop in oil and gas GDP, according to APS.
GDP growth was fueled by services (5.6%), industry (4.6%), construction, public works and water works (3%) and agriculture (2.7%). Construction and public works include oil industry projects.
Non-mercantile services (“services non marchands”) saw 1.7% growth. The French expression includes real estate, financial services and public administration.
APS reported that Algeria’s GDP was up 1.9% at current values year-on-year in Q1.
It also said the general price index (inflation) was up 0.4% in Q1 2019. It had gone up 6.3% in Q1 2018.
