São Paulo – Algeria should promote, from March 7th to 10th, the 3rd International Generic Medication Salon, in Algiers. According to information disclosed by the embassy of the country in Brasília, in around a decade, Algerian imports of medication rose from US$ 600 million to almost US$ 2 billion.
Brazilian companies may participate. The main objective of the fair is to promote nationalisation of the sector. The government of Algeria wants companies to stop being just importers and distributors but to start producing in the country, an initiative that is law.
According to the fair’s Internet site, local generic medication production rose from 28% in 2009 to 38% in 2010. The page adds that over 30% of diseases may currently be treated with generic medication.
Last year, according to the organizers of the event, the fair received 40 exhibitors and over 3,500 visitors, including health sector professionals, researchers, service providers and others, and included 18 conferences.
Exports from Brazil to Algeria generated almost US$ 1.5 billion last year, growth of 78% as against 2010, according to figures by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade. Sales of pharmaceutical products totalled US$ 936,400.
