São Paulo – The Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA) has won, for the third year in a row, the Massey Ferguson Journalism Prize in the Internet category. The article awarded was “A new age in the farmland,” by journalists Isaura Daniel and Geovana Pagel. The article addresses the challenges that Brazilian agriculture is faced with as a consequence of the climate change brought about by global warming. The journalists interviewed farmers from various regions of the country to report on how they are preparing for the new age in the farmland, which will be characterised by harsher and longer-lasting drought and rains.
The article competed, in the Internet category, with news stories “O outro lado do aquecimento global” (The other side of global warming), by journalist Nestor Tipa Junior, of the Canal Rural site, from the city of Porto Alegre, and “Consolidação do setor de cana desafia tradições” (Consolidation of the cane industry defies traditions), by journalist Inaê Riveras, of the Reuters agency in São Paulo. The television category award went to Cesar Dassie and his team, of the Globo Rural TV show, aired by TV Globo, for the article “Tailândia Brasileira” (Brazilian Thailand), and the newspaper category went to Giovani Ferreira and Luana Gomes, for the article “Negócios de R$ 1 bilhão” (1 billion real businesses), published by newspaper Gazeta do Povo.
The Massey Ferguson Prize in the magazine category was granted to news story “100 anos de Brasil” (100 years of Brazil), by Geraldo Hasse and Mônica Canejo, of the Globo Rural magazine, and the winner of the photojournalism category was Mauro Vieira, of newspaper Zero Hora, for the photograph “Os plantadores de florestas” (The sowers of forests). Each category had three finalists, and the winners were announced last Thursday (2nd) in the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The jury was comprised of five specialists in the fields of journalism and agribusiness. During the award-granting ceremony, in Porto Alegre, Geovana received the trophy from the export director of Massey Ferguson, Duílio De La Corte.
In five and a half years of existence, ANBA has already won five journalism awards. The Massey Ferguson Prize has already been won before by journalist Isaura Daniel, in 2007, for the article “The race for the perfect chicken”, and in 2008, for “The food that sprouts in the drought.” The ANBA team has also won journalism awards from the National Confederation of Transport (CNT), twice, as well as from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), the (National Association of Railway Transport (Antf), the Brazilian Coffee Exporter Council (Cecafé) and the Brazilian Machinery Manufacturers Association (Abimaq).
ANBA is a news agency that belongs to the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and was established in 2003, by Agência Meios, at the request of the organisation. The articles are published with the objective of generating a larger flow of information between the Arab world and Brazil, and establishing closer commercial and cultural ties. ANBA has Portuguese and English versions, and approximately 500,000 visits per month in Brazil and abroad. The agency has partnerships with eight news agencies in Brazil and in the Arab countries.
