São Paulo – The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) signed a membership agreement with the United Nations Global Compact on Thursday morning (22), during the last day of the Economic Forum Brazil & Arab Countries. The president and the manager of Institutional Relations of the Arab Chamber, Rubens Hannun and Fernanda Baltazar, attended the conference with the virtual presence of the United Nations Global Compact secretary-general in Brazil, Carlo Pereira (pictured above).
Launched in 2000 by then-UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, the Global Compact is a call for companies to align their strategies and operations with ten universal principles in human rights, work, environment and anti-corruption, in addition to developing actions that help address society’s needs.
The organizations that adhere to the Global Compact commit to those principles in their daily operations, such as protecting internationally recognized human rights, the right to collective bargaining in the work environment, ending gender discrimination, protecting the environment, and fighting corruption in all its forms.
In addition, companies have access to several benefits that contribute to the insertion of sustainability in daily operations and to increase the competitiveness of business in a fast-evolving world.
The Global Compact is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world, with around 14,000 members in 70 local networks covering 160 countries. The Global Compact network in Brazil is the third largest in the world, with over 950 members.
