Brasília – The League of Arab States has set a one-day deadline for the Syrian government to sign a protocol allowing observers to enter the country. In case Syria does not concur with the observer mission, then the Arab League will proceed with its economic sanction plans. Possible sanctions to be approved by the Arab League include suspension of commercial flights to Syria and the freezing of negotiations with the country’s Central Bank.
Should Syria not meet the deadline and refrain from signing the agreement this Friday (25th), foreign ministers from Arab League member countries will meet again next Saturday (26th) to discuss the sanctions.
More than 3,500 people have died in Syria since the protests against the government began, in March, according to estimates of the United Nations (UN). On Tuesday (22nd) and Wednesday (23rd), at least 37 people, including six children, have died in the country, according to activists.
