São Paulo – During July, Casa Una, in Belo Horizonte, brings to the public a programme turned to the Arab world. In progress is a movie exhibit and photography exhibition, and there is more to come.
“We chose the Arab world as it is being focussed on internationally. We also want to propose a new outlook on this region which, often, is so badly understood,” said Janaina Vaz, the coordinator of Casa Una.
The film exhibit began last week and should include 12 productions from countries like Syria, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Palestine and the United Arab Emirates. Among the titles highlighted are the Egyptian Microphone and the Moroccan Casanegra. The festival, organized by the Arab Culture Institute (Icarabe) has already been to São Paulo and Brasília.
Photograph exhibition “An eye on Palestine” features images by Aline Baker and Rogério Ferrari, depicting day-to-day scenes of the Palestinian people and their resistance against the Israeli occupation. The exhibition is promoted in partnership with the Icarabe.
From the 18th to the 21st, chef Cláudia Porto, coordinator of the Gourmet Space at Casa Una, will teach how to cook typical dishes of Arab cuisine and discuss the table manners of Arab people.
On the 21st, a debate will take place with the journalist Alexandra Martins and International Relations professor Leandro Rangel about Arab Spring. “They will address political and philosophical aspects and their repercussion, internationally and in Brazil,, says Janaina. The programme will end on the 22nd with the concert “Beirut,” with the musicians Vitor Santana and Marcos Suzano.
According to Janaina, the exhibition is receiving good feedback from the public. “Each month, Casa works with a different theme, and this is our first time focusing on an international topic. We have had a pleasant surprise. In the film exhibit, the audience has been staying to watch one more movie,” she reveals.
Casa Una is a cultural centre belonging to the Una University Centre, a higher education institution.
