São Paulo – Arabic music and dance will be the topics of four workshops given by the dance teacher and master’s degree holder in Arab culture Marcia Dib on August 15th and 16th in the city of São Paulo. The classes are designed for musicians, dancers and the general public.
Each day will have two workshops. The first course, on the 15th, will cover the topic Musicality and Dance. “It’s a course of attentive listening. I talk about the features of sound waves, the timbre. I encourage the person to listen to the music paying attention to one aspect”, explains Dib.
“They learn to listen separately to each aspect of the sound wave and later to put it all together. Depending on the group, I do exercises for the students to perceive the dance in their bodies”, says the teacher.
In the same day, she will present the workshop Snuj, a typical instrument of the Arabic dance that consists of two pairs of little metal plates that are played with the fingers.
“The snuj is a percussion instrument that you can play to encourage someone to dance, in a band or while you dance. I created a method in which the students can train and later apply wherever they want”, says Dib.
According to her, the snuj used to be more played but fell into disuse because people had a hard time with the instrument. “I think the difficulty lies on playing and dancing at the same time”, she assesses.
On the 16th, the first workshop cover Arabic Music. “The course covers all the main features of Arabic music, in what it differs from Western music, its instruments, how the melodies are build”, says Dib. She will also talk about “why the Arabic music is so fascinating and what it is to be a good musician”, she says.
The last course brings the topic Rhythms most used in dance. “You experience the rhythms in you, clapping and stomping, using instruments”, says Dib about the workshop. According to her, the most used rhythms in Arabic music will be covered: masmoudi saghir, said, maqsum, ayoub, malfuf, chifteteli, masmoudi kebir, zaffa and sama’i thaquil.
