São Paulo – Brazil exported 19.5 million bags of coffee between January and August this year, generating revenues of US$ 2.6 billion. The information was disclosed last Friday (5th) by the Brazilian Coffee Exporter Council (Cecafé).
The Arab countries accounted for 5% of Brazilian exports during the period, with US$ 111 million, the equivalent of 915,000 bags. The European Union was the leading buyer, with 10.3 million bags and revenues of US$ 1.3 billion. The Mercosur bought 445,000 bags, generating revenues of US$ 53 million.
In the survey per country, the leading buyer on the list of the Cecafé is the United States, followed by Germany, Italy, Japan, Belgium, Spain, France, Sweden, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. From January to August, the bulk of foreign sales of Brazilian coffee consisted of the Arabica variety, with 87%, followed by soluble coffee, with 9%, and the Robusta variety, with 4%.
The survey points out that in August, exports totalled 2.4 million bags, with revenues of US$ 342 million. There was growth of 9.4% compared with the volume shipped in August 2008, which totalled 2.1 million bags of coffee.
Santos was the Brazilian port that accounted for the largest share of shipments between January and August. In the twelve-month period up until August, Brazil exported 31.7 million bags of coffee and obtained US$ 4.6 billion in revenues.
