São Paulo – The city of Santos will host its first Immigrant’s Festival from October 4 to 6 at Valongo Train Station (pictured) at the Historic Center. The city in São Paulo’s coast houses the Port of Santos, one of the main entry gates for immigrants in Brazil from the 19th to 20th century. The event celebrates ten communities, namely the Arabs, Africans, Japanese, Greeks, Germans, Spanish, Italians, British, French and Portuguese.
The free program is for all ages and includes typical music and dance performances, workshops of crafts and dance, such as flamenco and origami, children’s plays, foreign movie screenings, and a food fair with typical dishes from each people.
The Arab tent will serve sfihas and Arab desserts. On Saturday (5) at 2 pm, there’ll be an Arab dance performance by Studio Osíris de Danças, a Santos school founded 12 years ago.
The event is hold by Santos’ Secretariat of Tourism. You can sign up for the workshops in advance through Santos’ Tourism Portal.
The festival will also feature a program in Pelé Museum as well as a stage on the São Bento street, which will feature performances by Rita Lee’s cover Nyna Lee & Rock’nboles, a tribute to Cazuza with Fábio Exagerado & Banda Ideologia; and a tribute to Queen with the band Kings of the Queen.
