Assai pulp generates riches in the Amazon
The fruit is called black gold by producers in the city of Igarapé-Miri, in Pará. There, around 280 small farmers live off assai, and they have established a cooperative to process the fruit. It is estimated that the productive chain employs around 4,500 people in the city.
