The sector grew 4% in Brazil in 2008, but ran a trade deficit of US$ 2 billion. Businessmen want to expand sales to new markets, such as the Arab countries and Africa.
The region was the leading market for the sector in 2008. Exports to Middle Eastern countries totalled 1.1 million tonnes, growth of 13% over 2007. Sales totalled US$ 1.9 billion, growth of 46%.
The estimate for the next world grain crop, disclosed yesterday by the United States Department of Agriculture, is of 2.24 billion tonnes. Brazil answers to 6.2% of that total.
The annual clearance sale lasts one month and involves a large share of the emirate’s retail sector, as well as hotels and airlines. Last year, consumers spent US$ 2.7 billion during the period.
