São Paulo – The award-winning film production “Wadjda” will have a free screening at Sesc São Carlos (the São Carlos branch of the Social Service of Commerce) on January 8, 2017, a Sunday, at 5 pm.
The movie, directed by Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al Mansour, tells the story of Wadjda, a 12-year-old girl living in a Riyadh suburb in Saudi Arabia. Although living under the very conservative culture of the country, the girl wears jeans, snickers, likes to listen to rock’n’roll and has a dream: to buy a bicycle to race her friend Abdallah.
Wadjda’s wish is her greatest obstacle: in the Arab country only boys are allowed to ride bicycles and they can’t play with the girls. But the girl doesn’t give up and throughout the move she battles to achieve her dream.
“Wadjda”, a joint production between Germany and Saudi Arabia, won awards at the Venice 2012 and Rotterdam 2013 film festivals.
The screening will take place at Sesc’s theater, which seats 269 people. The distribution of the free tickets starts one hour before the movie.
