São Paulo – Here, delicacy is the key. Accompanied by a good dose of creativity, it must be said. Specializing in origami, the Japanese art of folding paper to create objects, Imagiro wants to gain space domestically and abroad with its creations. Based in the city of São Paulo, the company mostly supplies advertising agencies, which order the items to give away as gifts and to use them in advertisement pieces, as well as magazines and TV commercial production companies. Established in March this year, the company has already been contacted by interested parties from Spain.
"There is a large market for origami in Brazil and abroad," explains Alexandre Sperandio, the owner of Imagiro. "These are pieces of work that can be used as souvenirs for birthday and wedding parties, to be given as gifts to clients, and to become scenic elements, among other possibilities," he says.
Imagiro specializes in kirigami (made using cut paper), bonsai-shaped origami (trees a few centimetres tall, planted in bowls, vases and trays) and lighting fixtures made using the technique. The items are designed by Alexandre, who outsources production for larger orders.
Innovations include origami items made from cloth and metal, as well as a 2 metre-tall lampshade made using the technique. "It is a white lampshade with an orange lamp," explains Alexandre.
The company is in the process of entering the foreign market through contacts with international origami associations, and ads on specialized international magazines. "We do have keen interest in exporting," claims Alexandre. What about the Arabs? "They could be our buyers, why not?," he says.
Imagiro was established after the end of the entrepreneur’s partnership with his ex-wife at another company, Kusudama Artes em Origami. Founded in 2002 and still in operation, Kusudama has exported to Portugal, Norway, Argentina and the United States. Proof that the market is open to the delicacy of the Japanese technique.
