São Paulo – Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro said in his speech at the G20 Summit on Saturday (21) that the countries are overcoming the severe health crises ushered in by the COVID-19, advocated for the union between the member countries to strengthen the economy and generate prosperity to the population and the World Trade Organization (WTO) reform. The meeting takes place online on Saturday and Sunday (22) under the presidency of Saudi Arabia.
G20: King Salman talks about COVID-19, economic recovery
“Together we are getting through one of the most severe health crises ever. We are overcoming uncertainties, logistic difficulties and misinformation,” Bolsonaro said during the meeting.
The president stressed that Brazil, and other G20 countries, joins the international efforts in searching for efficient, safe COVID-19 vaccines with universal access and affordable prices.
“We support the universal, fair and affordable access to the available treatments. It is with such a purpose that we participate in different initiatives to fight the disease,” he stated.
When addressing the economy, Bolsonaro stressed that the finance ministers and Central Bank presidents agreed to an action plan to support the global economy and suspend the debt service.
“These measures contribute to assure a due market liquidity and provide tax relief to the more vulnerable countries. So we avoided that the effects were even more devastating,” he said.
WTO
Brazil’s president advocated for the WTO reform, which he believes is a key element for the world economic recovery from the COVID-19.
According to him, Brazil advocates for advances in the three WTO pillars, which are negotiations, dispute settlement, and transparency.
“Regarding the WTO reform, we want the ambition to reduce subsidies for agricultural goods to have the same goodwill some countries have when promoting the trade of industrial goods. Additionally, the WTO reform process should include encouraging investment and creating the fair, balanced conditions for the international trade, not just in goods but in services, too,” he said.
Bolsonaro suggested G20 ministers debate and share the best practice about dealing with the topic, avoiding “subsidy traps and policies distorting international trade.” “I’m sure our coordinated efforts against these challenges will be key for the world economic recovery. Together we will strengthen our economies and create more wellbeing and prosperity for our peoples,” he said.
