São Paulo – The book ‘Na Senda das Noites – “Os Quatro Talismãs” de Charles Nodier e Les mille et une nuits’ (which can be freely translated into Portuguese as ‘In the Path of Nights – "The Four Talismans" by Charles Nodier and Les mille et une nuits), by Brazilian writer Christiane Damien, will be released on Thursday (16th), at the Livraria da Vila bookstore, in São Paulo.
In the book, the author approaches the importance of the work of Jean-Antoine Galland, a French orientalist regarded as the introducer of the Book of One Thousand and One Nights into western culture, to the oeuvre of French writer Charles Nodier.
Focusing on one of the author’s short stories, "Os Quatro Talismãs," she breaks down the elements that draw analogies with the Book of One Thousand and One Nights and goes way further than simply comparing the works, outlining a full set of inner and outer relations between both texts.
The release is backed by the Institute of Arab Culture (ICArabe), the Ateliê Editorial publishing house, the Postgraduate Program for Arab Language, Literature and Culture at the University of São Paulo (USP) and Livraria da Vila.
The event will also include a lecture by Mamede Mustafa Jarouche, the translator of the One Thousand and One Nights [into Portuguese] published by the Editora Globo company. The translation straight from Arabic into Portuguese earned him recognition and several awards. From a Lebanese family and born in the municipality of Osasco, he has worked as a translator and interpreter in Iraq and in Libya before dedicating himself to literature and academia. Presently, he is a professor at the USP, and is very active in matters of orientalism, Arab culture, literature and narrative, and translation.

Christiane Damien holds a master’s in Arab Language, Literature and Culture from the University of São Paulo (USP) and a member of the Arab Philosophy and History of Thought Translation and Research Group at the same university.
