Rio de Janeiro – Brazil has 49 products that carry a designation of origin. They are items produced in a certain geographic region in the country and certified by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPE) at the request of associations, unions and cooperatives of local producers. The number was made public this Thursday (20) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
That’s the case with red, white and sparkling wines produced in the region of Vale dos Vinhedos, Rio Grande do Sul state, the first products to earn the designation of origin label in the country, in 2002. The label means that only the wine produced in this region of the Rio Grande do Sul state can carry the designation of being produced at Vale dos Vinhedos. The most recent certification of origin label was granted to green, roasted and grounded coffee from the region of Região de Pinhal, São Paulo state, on July 19, 2016.
