São Paulo – The Brazilian city of Itajaí, in the state of Santa Catarina, is going to be a stopover in the Volvo Ocean Race, a famous yacht race around the world. Another stop will be in an Arab country, more specifically Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. The competition begins in October and should end in March of next year.
Aside from Itajaí and Abu Dhabi, other stopovers have already been defined, such as Cape Town, in South Africa, Lisbon, in Portugal, and Lorient, in France. The starting point will be Alicante, in Spain, and the arrival should be in Galway, Ireland.
Due to the competition, the city of Itajaí will undergo a series of works, such as the dredging of the Itajaí-Açú river canal, expansion of the cruise ship docking pier, works at the port, and the completion of the Municipal Event Centre.
The last team to win the Volvo Ocean Race, in the 2008-2009 edition, was Ericsson 4, headed by the Brazilian Torben Grael, which will also compete in the coming edition.
