São Paulo – Yesterday, on the last day of the Athens 2004 Olympic games, the Brazilian male volleyball team won gold, guaranteeing Brazil its best ever performance in Olympic Games. The country won four gold medals in Greece, a performance better than in Atlanta, in 1996, when the athletes came home with three gold medals.
In all, Brazil won ten medals in Athens. In the last Olympic games, in Australia, the country won 12 medals. None of them, however, were gold.
The performance this year guaranteed Brazil the 17th place in the overall ranking, the best country position since the Moscow Olympic games, in 1980, when Brazil ended in 17th place.
In Athens, one of the Brazilian athletes that guaranteed gold was sailor Robert Scheidt. Masculine beach volleyball duo Emanuel and Ricardo, sailing duo Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira, and the masculine volleyball team won the remaining golds. Brazil also won three silver and three bronze medals.
