Brasília – In a statement issued this Tuesday (8th), the Brazilian government decries, “in the strongest possible terms,” the attacks that took place on Monday (7th) in the Tunisian town of Ben Guerdane, on the Libyan border, claiming the lives of at least seven civilians and nine Tunisian security forces officers. “In expressing its solidarity to the victims’ families, to Tunisia’s government and its people, Brazil reiterates its utmost repudiation of all acts of terrorism, whatever their pretexts may be.”
The statement also reaffirms the Brazilian government’s confidence in the strength of Tunisian democracy and in its ability to stand up to the escalating extremism and intolerance across the region. It goes on to say that the attack in Ben Guerdane, which was launched from Libyan territory, shows the pressing need to establish a national unity government, as per the provisions of the Libyan Political Accord signed in December 2015, to ward off the rise of extremist groups in the country.
