Rio de Janeiro – The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which is considered official in Brazil, recorded a deflation (price decline) of 0.04% last September. The rate is lower than the inflation of 0.11% in August and 0.48% in September last year. The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported this Wednesday (9) that inflation reached 2.49% year-to-date and 2.89% in the 12 months leading to September.
September’s deflation was driven by a 0.43% price decline in food and beverages. Foodstuff to be consumed at home now cost 0.70% less in average. The main declines were recorded by tomato (-16.17%), which was the individual item that most impacted IPCA; potato (-8.42%), onion (-9.89%); and fruits (-1.79%). But some foodstuff saw a hike, including UHT milk (1.58%) and beef (0.25%).
