Brasília – Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro sanctioned this Tuesday (20) Law 14.141/2021, concerning the shipping of gene pools to other countries amid public health emergency situations. The law is intended to enable speedier development of therapeutic products. It is expected to simplify procedures for the export of samples containing genetic information.
The Secretariat-General to the President said the law is relevant to the development of research intended to address calamitous situations such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Gene pool exports can lead to quicker solutions of national interest in cooperation with international partners.
The Secretariat-General also said that when microcephaly cases in connection with the Zika virus in newborns were discovered in Brazil, many issues were encountered in submitting samples of the virus to foreign scientists and institutions, and that led to protracted diagnosis and action.
